  • What are the dimensions of a soilkind composter?
    soilkind measures approx. 23 x 68 x 52 cm (width x height x depth).
  • What volume of organic waste can I fill into soilkind?
Up to 10 litres of organic waste can be processed in each cycle. This produces about 1.5 litres of compost.
  • How much energy does the soilkind composter need?
soilkind is designed to be very energy-efficient and also uses the heat generated during the composting process. In addition, an efficient heat exchanger ensures that the heat required for processing is kept in the unit in the best possible way and is not lost. The electricity consumption of soilkind for a four-person household is about 200 kWh/year. This is roughly equivalent to the consumption of a coffee machine at home. For a two-person household, the consumption is about 75 - 100 kWh. However, the actual electricity consumption can fluctuate, as it strongly depends on how much water is in the kitchen waste to be processed. The more water, the longer the drying time!
  • Does soilkind have a guarantee?
We offer a standard 2 year warranty, but everything is designed with great care to last much longer than that, even under the heaviest use. We also build partnerships in the countries we ship to, so if something goes wrong, the problem can be solved in your home country. Warranty limitations: Improper use or installation Improper maintenance Unauthorised modification or repair If you need help, please just contact us. We are a small team, but we will get back to you as soon as possible.
  • How much does soilkind cost?
soilkind is a premium household device that will cost a little over 1,000 euros. Currently, our kitchen composter is not available on the market. At the moment we are producing the first units for our crowdfunding supporters - in the near future there will be a regular online shop where soilkind will be available. The supporters of our crowdfunding campaign will be the first to receive soilkind at the end of 2023.
  • What is the voltage with which soilkind is working?
Initially, soilkind will only be offered in a version with a voltage supply of 220-240V, 50Hz.
  • What types of food can I put in soilkind?
What soilkind likes to process for you: Vegetables, fruit (including banana peels), food scraps, bread, baked goods, processed foods, eggshells, tea bags (without string and clip), coffee grounds and leaves. Cheese can also be composted in soilkind, but only in small quantities, otherwise the compost will be too sticky due to the high fat content. Whether moldy or not is irrelevant. We recommend that the waste is as dry as possible to minimize energy consumption. What you can put in soilkind in small quantities: Meat, sausage, cheese, small (chicken) bones, small nutshells and cherry stones, (very) small twigs. What you should never put in soilkind (because it won't compost in 48 hours and will damage the unit): Paper, large (e.g. pork, beef) bones, fruit pits larger than 1 cm, string, twine, branches, wood, animal litter and carcasses, disposable items labelled "biodegradable" or "compostable". If you want to learn more about the topic, be sure to check out our related blog post.
  • How long does it take for soilkind to turn my waste into compost?
soilkind normally takes 48 hours to complete the composting process. But don't worry, thanks to our patented process, you can continuously add your food scraps to soilkind without having to wait until the composting process is complete. However, if this takes too long, you can stop the composting process at any time. However, you will then no longer be able to use the processed mass for your plants without further ado, as the composting process has not been completed.
  • Are there unpleasant odours?
To ensure that your compost is processed in an odourless way, we have implemented several technical features in soilkind, including an integrated, multi-stage activated carbon filter, which on the one hand prevents mold from forming in the filter and on the other hand discharges carbon dust or similar from the filter. If the appliance is used intensively (more than 1 kg of organic waste per day), we recommend changing the filter every 3 to 6 months.
  • How can my soilkind turn organic waste into compost so quickly?
Composting is done with the help of microorganisms that are naturally part of many organic materials or are applied by contact with hands or through the air. With the help of water and oxygen from the air, they are responsible for the decomposition processes. In a compost heap in the garden, the biological process can only take place in the middle of the heap, as only here can the necessary heat and moisture be maintained. Therefore, the material has to be moved regularly. soilkind has an intelligent control and sensor system and can thus set an optimal temperature, humidity and oxygen supply inside it. This accelerates the multiplication and metabolism of the microorganisms, making composting possible in just 48 hours. To answer this question further, we also provide a lot of content on our website and blog.
  • How do garden compost, fresh soilkind compost and fertiliser differ?
Garden compost is the most natural way to dispose of organic waste. When carefully managed, it results in an already mature compost. However, this is very time-consuming and especially cooked food should not be treated in this way as it attracts vermin. soilkind transforms the main components of your kitchen waste, such as sugar, starch or proteins. These are broken down into fresh compost within 48 hours. When mixed with soil, fresh compost gives your plants an instant boost and maximises their nutrient potential. soilkind compost is so rich in nutrients that it can be mixed in a 1:10 ratio. That means 1 part soilkind compost with 10 parts soil. Appliances that merely dry kitchen waste do just that: Shred food and dry it. Due to the excessively high temperatures and lack of moisture, no biodegradation process takes place. The organic compounds in this waste are therefore inaccessible to plants. In some cases, the use of dried organic waste (often called "fertiliser") can also cause mold and inhibit plant growth.
  • What do I do with all the compost?
10 litres of organic waste make about 1 to 2 litres of fresh compost. You can mix this with normal soil in a ratio of 1:10 and add it to your plants, i.e. 1 part soilkind compost with 10 parts soil. If you then have more compost than your plants currently need, you can store it in an airtight, dry container in a place protected from the sun for an almost indefinite period of time and reuse it when the time comes. Or give it away to your neighbours, your family & friends or the plants in your street or park!
  • Can soilkind compost cups or other disposable items labelled as "compostable"?
At the moment we do not advise disposing of such items in soilkind as the plastics used cannot be composted within 48 hours. We are currently testing how best to handle and break down disposable items such as cups. What is certain, at least, is that they do not harm the compost quality.
  • Does soilkind need an additive like coco peat to support the microorganisms?
No, soilkind does not need any additives. soilkind provides the perfect conditions for the microorganisms, which are a natural part of any organic material, especially in terms of moisture, temperature and aeration. We are also working on additives with which you can optionally adjust the nutrient composition of the soilkind compost - in case your plants have a more demanding "menu", and require additional nutrients that normal compost does not provide.
  • Is there anything left over from my organic waste besides compost?
There is some water left over from composting, as organic waste is mostly water. soilkind has an extra integrated container to collect the water. It is very rich in nutrients and you can water your plants with it.
  • What do I need to start using soilkind?
soilkind comes with everything you need to produce your own fresh compost: the unit itself, a power cable and an activated carbon filter. Our app will help you with onboarding. The app is an add-on - you don't have to use it to use soilkind, but it gives you lots of great tips and insights about compost and how to use it. Just plug it in, have your organic waste ready and go!
  • Do I have to clean the inside of my soilkind?
The feed chute, sliding lid and compost bin can be removed, simply rinsed or put in the dishwasher. Twice a month, the lint filter located in the feed chute should be rinsed out under running water. Otherwise, manual cleaning is not necessary. This is done by soilkind.
  • How often do I have to change the soilkind filter?
To ensure that your compost is processed odour-free, soilkind uses a multi-stage activated carbon filter. Depending on how often you make compost and what food scraps you put in, we recommend changing your soilkind filter every 3 to 6 months. The filters will be available in our online shop or via our soilkind app as soon as we start distributing the first soilkind units. We are looking for solutions for the most sustainable way to recycle the filter and even have plans for a reusable filter solution.
